Finding the Next Job:  Wisdom for all Seekers

Organizer:  Eleanor King
Panelists: Ruth Sando, Stephen Epstein, Alina Epstein
Date: Tuesday, 10 Nov 2015
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Sumner School

Program:

This program departs from our usual lecture format in being a hands-on workshop for all those thinking of transitioning to a new position.  Whether you are looking for your first job, trying to find a more challenging position in your current organization, or wanting to switch your line of work completely, this workshop is for you.  A panel of colleagues with different levels of expertise will first give you a few of their best tips on how to find the right job and on how to “package” yourself so you get that job. The meat of the program, following these short presentations and a brief question and answer session, will be a working session.  The panelists and other colleagues will look through resumes, talk strategies, and otherwise help you refine your search and polish your credentials.  Please bring your ideas for work and your resume with you when you come.  If you would like more detailed feedback, please submit your resume ahead of time to eleanormking@verizon.net.

Ruth Sando

Ruth Sando, owner and principal of Sando and Associates, is a seasoned applied anthropologist. Her company provides clients with effective communication strategies and messages; attitude, awareness and usage studies; evaluation; and identifying unmet needs. She has also worked for several large firms in the financial services field. Through her own career experience, she has seen the challenges that anthropologists face in the job market and has identified some approaches that can help candidates stand out.

She earned a B.A. in anthropology from The George Washington University and M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropology from The University of Hawaii.

Stephen Epstein

A Pre-Columbian Andean Archaeometallurgist with a PhD in anthropology, Steve has investigated careers in academia, with 25 years at the University of Pennsylvania; the military, with 30 years in the Army Reserve; and now, diplomacy, with 15 years in the State Department.  As a result of these experiences, he is uniquely qualified for his next job, which he has not yet identified, and can offer suggestions on how to reinterpret your credentials and experience.

Alina Epstein

In 2011, Alina graduated with a BA in Anthropology from the University of Chicago.  Now a young professional, she is transitioning from the creative floundering phase of her career to the deliberate development phase. Recently unemployed, she has fresh insights on navigating the DC job scene and forging opportunities in this competitive environment.
